Northern White Cedar is the superior choice for furniture because of its beauty, practicality and durability. The Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) used in this furniture is a creamy white color that weathers gracefully to a silvery gray when left out in the sun. Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is used in the Arbors and Garden items. It is a dark rusty red that, like the Northern Cedar, Ages to silver gray when left untreated. All Rustic cedar items may be used indoors or out, and may be painted or stained as desired.

Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage. Because of this superior resistance, cedar is frequently used for fencing and siding on homes, and it is the ideal choice for outdoor furniture and garden items.

Cedar is a very light wood (19 pounds per cubic foot) and is easy to work with. It will not shrink or warp as do many other woods commonly used for furniture and garden products. Cedar is uncommonly smooth=surfaced, making it more attractive than other woods.

All log furniture is subject to the natural process of checking. Checking happens as wood releases moisture, and normally occurs across or through the annual growth rings. It is the usual result of wood seasoning. Checking does not affect the structural performance or integrity of the wood.
